Afghan police have opened fire on hundreds of rioters protesting Danish political cartoons depicting the Muslim prophet Muhammad as a terrorist.
Several police officers and protesters were wounded during the clash Wednesday in Qalat, the capital of southern Zabul province.
Authorities say police first fired into the air to try to control the more than 400 protesters, many of whom were throwing stones.
Protests against the drawings have erupted this week across the Islamic world. Tuesday, four demonstrators were killed in Afghanistan and several others hurt in Indian Kashmir.
Denmark has urged its nationals to leave Indonesia and Iranian protesters threw firebombs at the Danish embassy in Tehran. Protesters have also attacked diplomatic missions in Syria, Lebanon and elsewhere.
