American swimmers Michael Phelps and Brendan Hansen have broken their own world records at the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Victoria, Canada.
Phelps broke his own 200-meter individual medley record Sunday with a time of 1:55.84. That is one-tenth of a second faster than his former record set three years ago just outside Washington in College Park, Maryland.
Hansen lowered his own record in the 200-meter breaststroke with a winning time of 2:08.50. His previous record of 2:08.74 was set August 5 at the U.S. national championships in Irvine, California.
In Phelps' race, he had to come from behind and pass American teammate Ryan Lochte, who earned silver with a time of 1:56.11. Ken Takakuwa of Japan earned bronze.
Phelps opened under world-record pace over the first 50 meters. Lochte gained the lead on the backstroke leg and was under pace on the breaststroke before Phelps roared back on the freestyle portion.
