Boston pitcher Curt Schilling started a game for the first time since April, giving up five runs in the first two innings Tuesday. But his teammates rallied, with Trot Nixon driving in the game ending run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Boston increased its lead in the American League East division to two and a half games ahead of the New York Yankees, who lost to the Seattle Mariners, 8-3.

In the National League, New York's Ramon Castro slammed a three-run homer in the eighth inning, helping the Mets come from behind in a 6-4 win against the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Washington Nationals edged the Atlanta Braves, 3-2. The Florida Marlins scored three runs in the eighth inning to beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 7-6. The Pittsburgh Pirates blasted the Milwaukee Brewers for five runs in the first inning of a 6-0 win. The Houston Astros snapped Cincinnati's four-game winning streak, downing the visiting Reds, 5-2. The San Diego Padres beat the Arizona Diamondbacks, 5-3, expanding San Diego's lead in the NL West to five and a half games over Arizona.
