Democratic Republic of Congo's President Joseph Kabila has won his country's presidential election, but not by enough to avoid a run-off election.
The independent electoral commission announced final official results Sunday evening, giving Mr. Kabila just under 45 percent of the vote. Challenger and former rebel leader Jean-Pierre Bemba came in second with about 20 percent.
The two are expected to face-off in a run-off election in October.
Announcement of the final results Sunday evening was delayed after a soldier guarding Mr. Bemba was killed in clashes with the security forces of Mr. Kabila.
The Reuters news service reports that the gun battle took place near the Independent Electoral Commission's press center in Kinshasa forcing the commission to abandon its announcement plans.
The city of Kinshasa has been tense since the July 30 polls, Congo's first in 40 years. Heavily armed police have been patrolling the city. Some information for this report was provided by AFP and Reuters.
