The attorney for Manuel Antonio Noriega says the former Panamanian dictator hopes to board a plane for Panama when he is released from a Miami prison in September.
Noriega was imprisoned in Miami in 1990 on drug-trafficking and money laundering charges. He ruled Panama for eight years until a U.S.-led invasion overthrew him in 1989.
The former dictator was sentenced to a 30-year jail term for protecting Colombian cocaine shipments through Panama in the 1980s. He is being released for good behavior in prison, after serving close to two-thirds of his sentence.
His attorney, Frank Rubino, says Noriega wants to go home and enjoy the rest of his life.
Back in Panama, Noriega faces more charges. While serving his U.S. jail term, he was convicted of murdering two political opponents back in the 1980s.
Rubino says Noriega will fight those convictions. Some information for this report was provided by AP.
