The first Iraqi female witness has testified in the trial of Saddam Hussein and his seven co-defendants.
The woman's voice was distorted electronically to protect her identity and she was hidden by a screen as she spoke in the special court in Baghdad Tuesday.
Sobbing, the woman recalled how she was tortured and forced to strip off her clothing after being taken into custody by security agents in the mainly Shi'ite town of Dujail, the scene of an assassination attempt against Saddam in 1982.
The ousted Iraqi leader could face the death penalty if he is convicted. He sat in silence Tuesday, taking notes during the fourth day of the trial, as the woman identified as "Witness A" described her ordeal.
Monday, two witnesses - Ahmed Mohammed Hassem and Jawad Abdul-Aziz Jawad - gave chilling accounts of killings and torture in Dujail, allegedly ordered by members of the Saddam regime.
