Defending champion Retief Goosen of South Africa has a three-stroke lead over Americans Jason Gore and Olin Browne after the third round of the U.S. Open golf tournament in Pinehurst, North Carolina.
Goosen fired a one-under-par 69 in the third round and is 3-under-par 207 for three rounds. Gore shot a 2-over-par 72 on the Pinehurst Number Two Course and is even par 210 for the tournament. Browne also had a 2-over-par 72 and is tied with Gore for second place.
New Zealand's Michael Campbell is tied with Australian Mark Hensby for fourth place at 1-over-par 211. Campbell fired a 1-over-par 71 in the third round while Hensby was 2-over-par 72 on Saturday. American David Toms is in sixth place at 2-over-par 212 after shooting an even par 70 in the third round.
World number one Tiger Woods of the United States is tied with Sweden's Peter Hedblom, England's Lee Westwood, and K-J Choi of South Korea for seventh place at 3-over-par 213. Woods had a 2-over-par 72 in his third round.
Goosen has won the U.S. Open twice before - in 2001 and last year. If the South African wins Sunday, he would join American veteran Hale Irwin with three U.S. Open titles.
