U.S. Senator Barack Obama is projected to have won the Democratic Party primary in the southern state of Georgia.
The win is based on state exit polls on the largest primary day of the election campaign, known as Super Tuesday, with presidential nominating contests held in 24 states throughout the country, including the populous states New York and California.
National polls have put Obama in a tight race with Senator Hillary Clinton.
Earlier, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee won the Republican caucus in the state of West Virginia, the first win in the Super Tuesday contests.
Huckabee won 18 delegates in West Virginia, beating rivals Arizona Senator John McCain and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.
Opinion polls show McCain ahead of Romney, with Huckabee running third.
Candidates win delegates to their party's national convention. The state of California is the biggest prize in today's race, with the largest number of delegates at stake.
To win the Democratic nomination 2,025 delegates are required, while 1,191 are needed to win the Republican nomination.
