Officials from Rio de Janeiro have submitted documents in support of the Brazilian city's bid to host the Summer Olympics in 2016.
Rio is the second of seven cities bidding to host the Games to submit its official files to the International Olympic Committee. Tokyo turned over its files Thursday. The deadline is Monday.
Rio said it would build on the legacy of the 2007 Pan American Games, when the city spent more than two billion dollars to prepare for the Olympic-style event for nations from the Western Hemisphere.
In Rio's Olympic bid, the giant Maracana stadium would be the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies. The Sambodromo stadium, which hosts the city's annual carnival parade, would be used for archery and the marathon. Copacabana Beach would stage the beach volleyball competition, triathlon and swimming marathons.
Rio is competing against Tokyo, Chicago, Doha, Qatar; Madrid, Prague and Baku, Azerbaijan for the right to host the games. The IOC will pare the field down to the finalists in June and will select the 2016 host next year.
