More rain has fallen on the fifth day of the Wimbledon tennis championships in London, but women's top seed Justine Henin of Belgium overcame her interrupted match to become the first player to reach the fourth round.
The French Open champion had little difficulty in her 6-1, 6-3 victory over Elena Vesnina of Russia. The match was suspended for more than one hour by rain with Henin leading 3-2 in the second set. She broke Vesnina's serve when play resumed then served out for the win.
Henin is aiming to complete a career Grand Slam, as previously she has also won singles titles at the Australian Open and U.S. Open. Her next opponent will be Switzerland's Patty Schnyder, who defeated Alona Bondarenko of Ukraine, 6-3, 3-6, 8-6, just before the second rainfall of the day stopped play.
Third-seeded Jelena Jankovic had her match interrupted twice by rain but persevered in a 5-7, 7-6, 6-2 win over Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic. Michaella Krajicek of the Netherlands upset eighth-seeded Anna Chekvetadze of Russia in three sets (7-6, 6-7, 6-2).
