Computers are driving the world at large, and processors are driving them. With the word “processor”, two key opponents of this gamut and occupying the top strata are Intel and AMD. Intel, the undisputed leader and chip giant, has an MSS of around 80% or more of the computer industry with its wide and competent line of products. You talk of processor and the tagline “Intel Inside” strikes the mind. Sir Gordon Moore founded a law that still paves the Intel and its success.
Intel started with mainframes, then x86 processors, shifted to desktop processors and now it is powering everything right from laptops, netbooks, MIDs, UMPCs, tablet PCs, portable media players and even your cell phones. More so we have the embedded business technology.Intel is the chip segment king pin.
AMD hit hard on Intel’s regime with its performing and praise worthy Opteron processor against Itanium in 2003. Computer makers discovered the second option as Opteron which evolved out to be the real winner of the competition. No one is reluctant to depend on sole manufacturer, AMD gave vendors and retailers a consolidated and a cut throat performance.
2003, is itself proved to be a milestone year in processor market, as this year saw the tumble in Intel’s share for the first time. Intel’s share dipped from 82.8% to 82.6% wheras AMD’s share rose from 15.6% to 15.7%. Intel was baffled with AMD’s head to head hits. Rivalry deepened with Intel’s quad core Xeon processors against AMD’s Barcelona; Intel’s Centrino vs AMD’s Turion 64; Intel’s Core 2 Duo vs AMD's Athlon 64 FX-62 and Athlon 64 X4; AMD’s Spider vs Intel’s Penryn; and now the market is witnessing the swing among Atom, Puma and Phenoms.
AMD, after Opteron could not repeat the magic and its shares starting stumbling faster. No doubt, from last three quarters it is registering profits but they are not good enough to recover the losses what Intel has offered it by making strides in price war even.
AMD has long way to go as where Intel has launched its 45nm based processor Atom in the market, AMD may be still working on it.
Listed here are some of the upcoming processors in the market by Intel.
Starting with the Roadmap of Intel, first we will discuss the upcoming processors in Desktop Segment. To meet the needs of all categories of consumers, Intel has four different divisions in this segment. For Professionals, Intel will offer Intel Core 2 Duo Processor with vPro Technology supported on Intel Q35 Express Chipset with 6MB L2 Cache.
Under Advanced Desktop segment, Intel will offer Intel Core 2 Duo processor with Intel dual-core technology and Intel 64 based on Intel G31/G33 Chipset with up to 3MB L2 Cache.
Under Basic Desktop Segment, the company will offer Intel Pentium processor with Intel 64 supported on Intel 945GC/G31 Express chipset offering up to 2MB L2 Cache.
For entry level Desktop segment, Intel will offer Intel Celeron processor powered by Intel 945GC/G31 Express Chipset with 512KB L2 Cache.
Next comes the, Mobile Segment. The upcoming processors for this segment are also divided into four categories targeting the needs of all types of manufacturers.
a) First comes the Performance Mobile segment, for this category Intel Centrino 2 processor technology with Intel Core 2 Dup processor supported on Mobile Intel GM/PM 45 Express chipset with 3MB/6MB L2 Cache. For wireless solutions, the processor is integrated with Intel Wi-Fi link 5000 series (802.11a/g/n).
b) Next is the Mainstream Mobile Segment. For this, Intel offers Intel Centrino Duo Processor technology with Intel Core 2 Duo processor offered on Mobile Intel GM/PM 965 Express Chipsets with 3MB/6MB L2 Cache. For wireless solutions the chip will be offered with Intel PRO Wireless LAN 4965a/g or LAN 4965a/g/n (802.11a/g/n).
c) Targeting the Value Mobile Segment, Intel will offer Intel Celeron M processor with Intel GL960/GL40 chipset with 1MB L2 Cache and optional wireless.
d)The category which is arising as craze among users is Net-books; for this Intel will offer Intel Atom Processor based on 945GSE chipset with 512KB Cache and optional wireless solution.
Next on the list are processors for Servers. Targeting the Enterprise Segment for servers, Intel will offer Intel Itanium Processor or Intel Xeon processor X7350 – MP.
For Mid-range, Intel Xeon Processor E7320-MP with 4MB L2 Cache will be offered.
For Performance DP, Intel Xeon Processor X4560-DP with 12MB L2 Cache will be offered.
For Mainstream, Intel Xeon Processor E5440-DP with 12MB L2 Cache will be offered.
For Performance UP, Intel Xeon Processor X3360-UP with 12MB L2 Cache will be offered.
For Entry Level UP, Intel Xeon Processor E3110-UP with 6MB L2 Cache will be offered.
To counter these processors, AMD has also lined up its range of processors like recently launched “Shanghai”, next “Deneb” to arrive in Q1 ’09 and by Q4 ’09 “Istanbul” will hit the market.
